About Environmental Health & Industrial Hygiene

Industrial Hygiene (IH) is the science and art of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace conditions that may cause workers' injury or illness. An industrial hygienist protects employees' health in the workplace by creating and implementing programs, policies and procedures to measure and reduce employees' exposure to physical, chemical, and biological factors.

Environmental Health is the science and practice of preventing human injury and illness by identifying and evaluating environmental sources and hazardous agents and limiting exposures to these agents in air, water, food, and other environmental media or settings that may adversely affect human health. An Environmental Health Specialist protects the campus community by conducting health inspections to investigate and assess hazardous environmental agents related to food safety and water quality and implement programs and policies that align with applicable local, state and federal regulations in order to protect people and provide a healthier environment.
